The C-130 is by far the most widely used tactical cargo plane of the last forty years. Notwithstanding its age no real replacement has been built so far. Therefore the four-engine Loockheed Aircraft continues to serve in many different functions with more than fifty Air Forces around the world. Continuous up- dating of its electronic equipment and in some cases stuctural changes of the fuselage are extending the life span of this most successful military cargo aircraft. Its characteristic sturdiness ?and reliability have once again been demonstrated during the Gulf War Operations of Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, a retractable landing gear, and was powered by liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engines. The 109 first saw operational service during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II, during which time it was the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. From the end of 1941 the Bf 109 was supplemented by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

The victory of the US101 consortium (composed of Lockheed-Martin, Agusta Westland and Bell Helicopter Textron) in the VXX contest, announced in January 2005, was certainly fantastic. The fact that the US Marine Corps have selected a European product to replace their VH-3D in the role of marine one, i.e. the helicopter that transports the President of the United States, is unprecedented. The initial operational capacity of this version of EH-101 is expected for the year 2009

The SEPECAT Jaguar was a joint Anglo-French project. It first took to the air in 1968 and, since then, 202 of them have seen service with the RAF and another 200 with the Armée de l’Air. It has also achieved a certain success on the export front. The reduced surface area of the wing gives excellent low altitude performance and this, together with its considerable weapons payload, makes it a feared ground strike aircraft, as demonstrated in conflicts in Chad and Iraq. Thirty-eight of the two-seater trainer versions were purchased by the RAF and another 40 by the Armée de l’Air.

The 155th Group, with electronic warfare duties, has a black panther as its insignia. The livery is also characterized by its metallic color and by the roman “gladius” on its tail rudder; this recalls the badge, issued in 1931, that could be worn by the first airforce pilots who specialized in attack missions. Currently this unit, based in Piacenza, Italy, is equipped with Tornado ECRs that can employ AGM-88 HARM missiles for suppression of enemy radars. Operational duties include both national and international missions as part of the military exercise planned with other NATO forces.

The airplane is the same as the one used by the Royal Air Force for training, with further improved mechanics to provide even quicker command response times. Furthermore smoke generators have been inserted which are used during exhibitions, allowing for 5 minutes of white smoke, 1 minute of red smoke and 1 minute of blue smoke. From the time of their creation in 1965, the “Red Arrows” have participated at more than 4,000 manifestations in over 52 countries, becoming one of the most famous aerobatic teams in the world.

The F-15 also has excellent electronics, enabling best use of its missile armament. It was used by the American and Israel air forces in recent wars, showing its superiority over all the enemy planes it encountered, including the more recent MIG-29s.

The Hawker Siddeley Harrier astounded the world with its unique ability to take-off and land vertically utilizing vectored thrust from its powerful 8000kg thrust engine. First tested in concept in 1960, the aircraft went through many periods of testing and modification prior to acceptance by the Royal Air Force and other nations in 1974. The production Harriers utilized either a Pegasus 6 or 11 engine of 8000 or 9750kg thrust and it was only natural that the Royal Navy should find application for this type of aircraft with their fleet air arm. Various political and financial considerations delayed the order for the "Navalized" Harrier until May 1975, when the Admiralty ordered an initial 24 aircraft plus one T.Mk.4's in 1980.

In March 1943, a jet prototype designed by the Gloster company and equipped with a De Havilland H.1 engine made its first successful test flight. In July of 1944, pilots flying the first production version of the Meteor, the F.1 fighter, fought bravely in the Battle of Britain under the No. 616 Squadron. The F.1 housed two Rolls-Royce Welland jet engines capable of taking the fighter to speeds of 668km/h and was relatively successful in defending the British homeland against German V-1 rockets. The F.1 was later replaced by the improved F.3 version with its Rolls Royce Derwent engines, changed canopy style, and increased fuel capacity.
